Displacer Level Transmitter Technology Offers Application Solutions for Interface Service and Nuclear Power Plant Operation

Displacer level transmitters, such as the Magnetrol® E3 Modulevel® linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) transmitter with range spring technology, offer advantages in a variety of level measurement applications. In fact, they are especially well suited to two particular applications – level control at nuclear facilities and interface service.

Interface Service Applications
In most interface applications, the area where the two liquids meet is a mixture of the liquids rather than a clean interface. Many interface applications are oil/water separators used in refining and oil and gas. The oil and water can create a thick emulsion layer that makes measurement difficult for most technologies. A displacer transmitter is the best solution for interface service because it can track the middle of the emulsion.
  • Guided wave radar (GWR), which is often considered for this application, can be affected by the relative dielectric constants of the two liquids, the thickness of the upper liquid layer and how “clean” the interface between the two liquids is.
  • RF capacitance is also used for interface service, but the dielectrics of the two liquids – and the thickness of the top layer – can affect the accuracy of the level reading.
Nuclear Power Plant Operation Applications
Displacer level transmitters also feature an enclosing tube that acts as a static isolation barrier between the LVDT and the process media, making it an ideal solution for numerous nuclear power plant applications, including:
  • Containment structures and anywhere that radioactive coolant circulates.
  • Containment sump.
  • Containment cooling water storage and make up.
  • Feedwater heaters.
  • Spent fuel storage.
  • Condensate storage tanks.
  • Suppression pool.
  • Scram discharge volume tanks.
  • Reactor water storage tanks.

Displacer transmitters also provide remote mounting capability that allows you to install the device up to 400 feet away from the vessel. This is critically important in nuclear power plants because electronic components, such as microprocessors, diodes and amplifiers, simply cannot last in radioactive environments.
